Why toddler toothpaste

Why do toddlers need toothpaste?

Because poor oral health can start early, with 24% of toddlers under the age of 36 months and 57% children aged 36 – 71 months suffering from Early Childhood Caries (ECC) also called nursing caries or baby bottle tooth decay. Nursing caries refers to decayed tooth surfaces of the primary /milk teeth of children up to the age of 6. Nursing caries can cause pain and infections, and in severe cases require hospitalisation .

But why a special toothpaste?

Toddlers typically don’t have the high sugar and high acid diets of adults or older children; thus, they don’t need the harsher abrasives and cleaning agents in their toothpastes. Toddlers are also known to swallow toothpaste, up to 65% even accounting for rinsing . Most toothpastes (even children’s toothpastes) are not safe to swallow because of parabens, foaming agents or Fluoride .

Active Ingredients:

45% Calcium Carbonate – Gently cleans young teeth and removes plaque. In the quantity used, studies showed that it increased mouth pH by neutralising acid created by mouth bacteria , even after 8 hours post-brushing . It is a commonly used calcium supplement in baby formula.

15% Xylitol – Fights tooth decay by starving mouth bacteria and disrupting the plaque structure, thus leading to less acid production . Just 5% was found to be equivalent to a low-Fluoride toothpaste at preventing cavities in toddlers . To maximise our toothpaste’s ability to fight tooth decay, we use 15% Xylitol. Xylitol is commonly found in sugar-free foods and kids oral care products.

Supporting ingredients:

Glycerine – Acts as a humectant (retains toothpaste moisture levels). Found in baby teething gels.

Purified Water

Xanthan Gum – Our thickening agent. It is commonly used in food items like salad dressings, and baby teething gels.

Citric Acid – Our preservative. It is a weak acid found in most citrus fruits.

SLS or other foaming agents – Can irritate the mouth and potentially cause mouth ulcers .

Flavours, colours, odours – Teaching children new habits is tough, as “fun” flavours and colours in toothpaste can be distracting. That’s why our product is free of these distractions, so toddlers learn that toothpaste is for brushing, not eating.

Fluoride – While Fluoride is an effective anti-cavity agent, it is not considered safe to be consumed by children.

Paraben, Artificial Preservatives, Silicas, Gluten – We’ve set the bar high, so our ingredient list is short and without unnecessary or unsafe extras.

Ingredients that aren’t food grade – Which is why we can say “safe if swallowed” with peace of mind .

      How to Use

      Pea-sized amount
      Smear up to a pea-sized amount of Ethiaspire toddler toothpaste onto a children’s soft toothbrush or finger brush.
      Brush child’s teeth in a circular motion
      Brush your child’s teeth in a circular motion along the tooth surface twice daily.
      Spit out as much as possible
      Encourage your child to spit out as much as possible after bushing to build good oral care baits. Safe if swallowed when used as directed.
      Brush under adult supervision
      Children should only brush under adult supervision. Cap tightly after use and store in a cool, dry place. Do not use if allergic to any ingredients or if irritation occurs.
